KNK Sodium Drum Melt Out Facility

The Challenge
There is a requirement to dispose of 76 Tonnes of primary and secondary sodium from the KNK II Reactor in Karlsruhe, Germany using the PFR Sodium Disposal Plant.

The sodium is currently stored in 200 litre drums and is in the solid state.

The KNK Sodium Drum Melt Out Facility is designed to melt the sodium in each drum and transfer the liquid metal to the existing Irradiated Fuel Cave Batch Tank for subsequent processing in the Sodium Disposal Plant.
The Melt Out facility is to be installed in the PFR Reactor Hall (or Secondary Containment Building as it is now known).

JGC were awarded the contract by RWE Nukem to manufacture, assemble, test and install the Melt Out Facility. This project is still in process at T3|UK facility and is in the process of moving into the off-site testing phase of work.

Evan Park is one of the RWE Nukem Engineers involved in this project and he will explain the rig in a little more detail.
